Cairo is not only Egypt's capital and largest metropolis in Africa but also the political, economic and cultural center of the Middle East. When you visit this multicultural melting pot, you will experience fascinating contrasts: the up-and-coming and vibrant city on the one hand and the millennia-old history and its buildings on the other.
When you cross the Nile in Cairo, you change from one city to the next, because on the west bank is Giza with the pyramids - the only remaining of the seven wonders of the ancient world. They have been Egypt's landmarks for thousands of years.
Even before the pyramids were built, the guardian of the dead was already there: the famous sphinx. This colossal monument depicts a lying lion with a king's head and mane. Another highlight of your stay in Cairo is a visit to the Egyptian Museum. The tour of the museum runs clockwise from the Old Kingdom to the Late Period. The undisputed highlight is the complete tomb treasures of Tutankhamun, such as his richly decorated mask and his gilded sarcophagus. Cairo is the capital of Egypt and with around 20 million inhabitants the largest city in Africa, but that can only be estimated. Cairo is the third largest city in the world with many unique sights from different cultures (Pharaonic, Coptic, and Islamic) and definitely one
It is worth a trip. Cairo is also called the loving city of 1000 minarets because it houses a lot of old, big, small, new, and absolutely worth seeing mosques. Here is the El Azhar Mosque, the world's first and world-renowned Islamic university. Built of alabaster, the citadels and many mosques belonged to the Ottoman King Mohamed Ali and are still beautiful and very well preserved. One of the 7 ancient wonders of the world is the Sphinx and the Pyramids. Very interesting and a MUST! is the Egyptian International Museum with over 20000 unique exhibits, the most famous treasures in the world. There are also 500 gold pieces from Tutankhamun's grave goods, the most famous being his golden mask.
The Egyptian Museum, the Coptic Church, the old town of El Muski, and the stunning Hanging Church are must-sees.
Khan El Khalili Street is the most famous old street in Cairo with many original bazaars and shops. The trades are passed down through generations and so many traders have been in his business for over 90 years.
